Spring flowers in the Robertson Wine Valley

Posted Thu, 23 Aug 2012 (23 months ago)
Namaqualand is famed for its spectacular displays of spring flowers. But what many people don’t know is that the Western Cape along Route 62 also boasts a flamboyant spring flower display.

The Robertson Wine Valley, a short drive from Cape Town, is expecting this year’s ‘show’ to be particularly stunning. The flowers last year were pretty special and left a lot of seed for this year. Coupled with an unusual volume of winter rain this means that the semi-desert area is going to produce an outstanding spectacle of vibrant flowers this spring.

Robertson is called the ‘small town with a big heart’ and the area is known predominantly for its excellent wines and natural, rugged beauty which lends itself to the outdoor life, hiking and photography.

We would like to encourage locals and visitors to come to the Robertson Wine Valley to share the experience of one of nature’s visual extravaganzas – dazzling carpets of intensely coloured, delicate flowers.

Accommodation in Robertson

In addition to delicious wines and a striking profusion of blooms, the area boasts several fantastic restaurants and places to stay.

Excelsior Manor, in the heart of the Robertson Wine Valley, is a Cape Revival manor built during the ostrich feather boom of the early 1900s. Having been recently lovingly restored to its former glory, it offers quiet luxury and personal  hospitality. Set in a mature and graceful garden, with shady trees and fragrant roses, the Manor has homely bedrooms, with ensuite bathrooms, and exudes old world charm. Generous home cooked breakfasts and delicious three course dinners are served in the traditional dining room or on the raised deck overlooking the swimming pool with a view over the vineyards to the Langeberg mountains. Excelsior is a working wine farm which has been in the de Wet family for 5 generations since 1859.
