Whales and Arums Herald Spring

For those of us living in the deep south of Cape Town, in the False Bay area, there are two sure signs of spring that appear in nature towards the end of winter… arum lilies in abundance, and the return of the whales to our coastal waters.

Take a drive along the Strandfontein road heading out towards the Cape Winelands at the moment and you’ll be treated to the sight of countless white arums, habitat of the Cape Western Leopard Toad.

Meanwhile, a drive anywhere from Cape Point all the way to Hermanus via Gordon’s Bay may well allow you a glimpse of a Southern Right Whale waving a friendly tail, blowing a fountain of spray or best of all leaping clean out of the water in a breach.
These reminders point to the arrival of spring, and also remind us that it’s almost time for the annual Hermanus Whale Festival.
The picturesque seaside town of Hermanus is renowned the world over for offering some of the best land-based whale watching opportunities on the planet.
The annual Whale Festival is a celebration of all things whale related, and a full programme for all ages is planned each year.
The 2009 Hermanus Whale Festival’ s preliminary programme has now been published and it’s jam packed with, among other things:
  • A kids market
  • Whale wine festival
  • Whales & Wheels Vintage Car Show
  • Classic Charity Golf Event

  • Music including an ABBA tribute and well known Country Music legends

I *love* spring time - it always puts me in such a happy mood! Just last week we saw a whale breaching in Glencairn. It's really something wonderful to see...

I am off to Hermanus this weekend, so just miss the festival, but I am sure the whales will be there already.

After this winter's floods, I am readier than ever for Spring / Summer 09!
