Wildlife Wednesday - Pumba Ranger Diary and Wildlife Images 22 August 2012

Justin Saunders, ranger at Pumba, shares a snippet from the ranger diaries for this past week.

On trail along the Kariega

The Kariega River which finds its source in the Cape fold mountain range on Pumba Private Game Reserve is such a beautiful feature that shapes the reserve and an area that we frequently use to explore the bush with you the guest. On this day we came across the Breeding heard of elephant in the river drinking, youngsters playing and others sand bathing in the soft warm river sand. We found ourselves in an opportune position to shadow the heard with the safety of the river and a cliff face between us and the herd.

Along the river we find many unique plants that are quite specific in regard to there habitat requirements and it is them which brings the herd down to the river beds to browse in the shade of our national tree the Yellow Wood. Speck boom is one of the plants found extensively in the river valley and is believed  help increase the milk production of lactating females and with two youngsters both under a year old it is understandable that we often find the herd along the river.

Who knows what else the plants found in and around the river can do for the elephant but on this day they provided great cover to allow for this great experience.
