Cape Winelands Regions

Cape Winelands

The Cape Winelands offers towering mountains, fertile vineyards and whitewashed Cape Dutch architecture. Visit the Cape Wine Route and taste our South African way of life with The Portfolio Collection and Cape Winelands accommodation.

The Cape’s winemaking tradition harks back to the French Huguenots, who brought their skills to the land in 1688. Many started the wine tradition in the tranquil valley of Franschhoek.

Set amidst these mountains and vineyards, historical towns and small villages sit establishments offering spectacular Cape Wine Route accommodation.

Some of South Africa’s most popular golf courses are found in the Cape Winelands.

Franschhoek

Franschhoek, a valley rich in history is in the heart of the Cape Winelands and is only 45 minutes from Cape Town. This charming village is complemented by majestic mountains and it invites you to come and enjoy the gourmet capital of the country. Filled with cafés and restaurants, visitors to this historic town can sample exquisite French food, buy homemade chocolates and sample local wines.

A fun thing to do is to book a show at the Barnyard Theatre; pack a picnic basket and enjoy a range of theatre, music and jazz in a barn-like atmosphere.

Franschhoek has a reputation for being one of the premium Cape wine routes with accommodation in the vineyards with breathtaking scenery, or in the village itself.

Gordon’s Bay

Gordon’s Bay overlooks the whole of the False Bay coast and Table Mountain. Situated close to the Helderberg wine country, accommodation with The Portfolio Collection can give you the best of both worlds.

Gordon’s Bay offers the perfect spot to spend a day at the beach, try your hand at windsurfing, Jet Ski, or join the bathing beauties on Bikini Beach. This is a great spot for the kids too.

Paarl

The Paarl region is regarded by many as the country’s leading wine producing area and its wine route, known as the Red Route, has become known for its holistic approach to the fruit of the vine. The Portfolio Collection features Cape winelands accommodation including 18th-century Cape Dutch Homesteads.

Somerset West

Somerset West is centrally located to the Cape wine route. Accommodation can be found tucked away in the quiet streets of this tranquil town.

Have tea or lunch at the Vergelegen Wine Estate, in the shade of giant camphor trees, which are officially protected and listed as a National Monument.

Stellenbosch

Stellenbosch is South Africa’s second oldest town and is rich in history, and forms the heart of South Africa’s wine industry. A town of great beauty and culture that is steeped in South African tradition. The Stellenbosch Wine Route is arguably the country’s most famous.

Musical evenings and soirées are a popular feature of this university town, including outdoor concerts in the Oude Libertas Amphitheatre.
