Early travellers and explorers who visited the Cape in the 1500s traded with the Khoi Khoi people who lived on these shores. In 1798 Lady Ann Barnard visited this region, and her journal describes how wagons struggled to ascend what is now Sir Lowry's Pass. Today, this pleasant journey takes only 2 hours from Cape Town to Swellendam, passing unspoilt villages and towns. The Overberg is a wheat and sheep farming area and the gentle rolling hills stretch endlessly from the Indian Ocean at Cape Agulhas the southernmost tip of Africa, to the Langeberg Mountains. Whale watch from Hermanus to San Sebastian Bay at Witsand, visit Greyton with its whitewashed thatched Cape cottages and explore charming, historic Swellendam. Take a trip back in time and stay in some of the historic homesteads and country houses in the area, which offer bed and breakfast.

Genadendal - On the way to Greyton, this historic tranquil mission village is set against the mountains, and Lady Anne Barnard visited here in 1895. See the original church and old mill and browse through the museum and home industry shop.

Greyton - Meet the villagers at the Saturday morning market where home-bakes, fresh produce and organic veggies are sold, then pop in for coffee and cake or lunch at the Oak & Vigne.

Stanford - In search of bric-à-brac or some stylish art, visit this small sleepy village, enjoy lunch at Marianna's and sample her "fresh from the garden" food, then take home some deli delights.

Visit the Drostdy Museum in Swellendam, and local crafts are made and sold at historic Morgenson, and the Old Gaol complex, which also has an alfresco bistro in the courtyard. Potter Jan du Toit's vases are famous, visit him and other potters in the town. Foodies will enjoy inspired light meals at Colour and Coffee. The popular Bontebok National Park on the Breede Rivier is situated on the outskirts of the town and ideal for a morning or afternoon visit, it is also one of the best birding spots in the Western Cape.
