The Old Village

In Citrusdal on the West Coast in the Western Cape. The Old Village country retreat and self-catering guest house is located in a majestic setting on the flower route with the Cederberg Mountains, snow covered in winter, as a backdrop. The Old Village on Modderfontein Farm circa 1725 was the centre of life and commerce in the valley until Citrusdal was developed around 1920, and is one of the few authentic farm villages in the country. Sympathetically restored, there is a choice of five heritage cottages, each with its own rich history and fine Cape antiques. One, The Smithy, is the oldest house in the valley. Thomas Bain lived in another, Bains Cottage, when he built Grey’s Pass through the farm in 1857. Enjoy fine food and drink with the locals at the period restaurant and pub, then simply relax and absorb the peace and tranquillity of this fully organic citrus farm.
