"DON'T STAY ANYWHERE ELSE IN FRANSCHHOEK!" Atlanta - May 25, 2008
This place was amazing! Don't stay anywhere else in Franschhoek. The hospitality is personable and friendly and the guest houses are gorgeous and very comfortable. We had friends who stayed at Le Quartier Français, and we all agreed that Akademie was so much better. And the extra bonus is that it was almost half the price! Wow!!
"OUTSTANDING !!" UK - Apr 30, 2008
What can I say about the Akademie Street Guesthouse without me sounding as if I am in the pay of the hosts? Well I am not - and there is only one word to describe the hospitality, ambience, decor, food, staff and "mine hosts" - OUTSTANDING !! If you don't believe me go and prove me wrong - you wont!!
"LOVED IT!" Cypres - April 14, 2008
We spent two wonderful nights in the 'Uitsig' room during our 10 days in South Africa. The room was huge and looked exactly like the website - if not better with fantastic views from both balconies.
The service here was fantastic and the breakfasts were too die for set outside in a beautiful enclosed courtyard full of trees and plants. Arthur & his wife and staff were lovely, very helpful and courteous. The guesthouses are within easy walking distance of the main street and restaurants (we felt v safe at night walking) and although Franschhoek has a surreal 'chocolate box/disneyesque perfection' to it for a couple of nights it was just what we needed.
The toiletries in the rooms were lovely - and the best touch of all was having a fridge in the room with complementary soft/alcoholic drinks that were replenished daily. There is nothing worse than having to pay over the odds for a bottle of water from a mini bar so this was a wonderful surprise. The room was also equipped with a mobile phone with numbers of all the local restaurants programmed in that you could use for the duration of your stay - again a wonderful little touch.
It is not hard to see why Akademie is rated #1 on TripAdvisor - as their attention to detail is outstanding and it truly deserves it's place at the top of the pile - a little gem! Congratulations!
“VREUGDE COTTAGE IS A FAVORITE!" United States - Mar 29, 2008
Akademie Street Guesthouse has earned the distinction of being one of my favorite bed and breakfasts! My companion and I stayed in Vreugde, a small honeymoon cottage, while our friends stayed in the larger Twyfeling. Tiny, yet well-appointed, our guesthouse had a sense of intimacy and luxury larger hotels are not able to recreate. The main room contained a large king-size bed with a flat screen television mounted on the opposite wall, which we never turned on! Instead we were captivated by the views through the two sets of French doors that opened to a brick and stone terrace. Complete with a leather couch and cafe table, it was the perfect place to enjoy a bottle of wine in the evenings. Beyond the terrace was a small pool, all confined within our private garden courtyard.
The main room also contained a tiny kitchenette--reminiscent of a ship's galley--and stocked with fruit, snacks and beverages. The entire room was tastefully decorated with original watercolors by the owner's father. Opening off the bedroom was a luxurious bathroom. It included all the "necessities:" heated towel racks, fluffy robes, scented candles, a deep soaking tub and locally produced toiletries (Charlotte Rye) made with essential oils from Grasse, France. Heaven!
Breakfast, included with our stay, did not leave us disappointed. We ate a leisurely breakfast in the dining room of the main house while we visited with the delightful owners. We were served a hot breakfast of our choice along with fresh-squeezed orange juice, tea, coffee, homemade breads and muselex, fresh yogurt and a fruit platter with at least 10 different seasonal fruits.
The accommodating owners were able to recommend a wonderful restaurant for our dinner, Le Bon Viviant, which was conveniently located within walking distance. Of course no trip to Franschhoek is complete without a visit to the world-class wineries, and we were pleased to find the bed and breakfast was only a short drive away from the wineries.
I highly recommend Akademie Street Guesthouses, especially Vreugde cottage. While some may be turned off by the cottage's small proportions (especially if one is a heavy packer), I found it charming and intimate. Twyfeling was more spacious and slept more people, but didn't have the same captivating feel of Vreugde. Akademie Street Guesthouse was a favorite among us all and difficult to leave!
"THE PERFECT HOSTS" Bangkok - Mar 26, 2008
We checked out tripadvisor when planning our trip to SA in February this year and came across this little guesthouse with rave reviews. As we could not find a single bad one - we thought we'd give it a go. It did not disappoint - its one of the best places we've ever stayed in - worldwide. Katherine & Arthur are the perfect hosts and we could have quite happily moved in if they'd let us!
Fantastic guesthouse, tastefully decorated, spotlessly clean, scrummy breakfast, and lovely, friendly staff - the whole place is just awesome. Thank you so much for a fantastic stay. Vicki & Mitch
