• Birds and Animals: The Helderberg Nature Reserve is a bird lover’s paradise for those who enjoy hiking. Alternately the whole family will enjoy a visit to the Dick Dent Bird Sanctuary which features numerous wetland birds. Monkey Town is a great place for a kid-friendly day out meeting monekys, apes and birds.
• Coastal activities: Somerset West is just 6km inland from the False Bay coast - both Strand and Gordon’s Bay are within a short distance offering beaches, whale watching, surfing and boating.
• Fruit Route: Head 15 minutes out of town and spend a day exploring the fruit route from Elgin to Hermanus.
• Hiking and walking: Visit the covering Helderberg Nature Reserve and hike through 245 hectares with fynbos with amazing sea views all the way to Cape Point. Serious hikers can take a 3 day hike on the Boland Hiking Trail along the Hottentot's Holland Mountain Range to Franschhoek.
• History: If you enjoy history, be sure to visit Vergelegen Wine Estate which was established in 1700. The beautifully restored homestead features a unique underground winery. Also look out for the old bridge over the Lourens River (built in 1845); the old NG Church around which the village originated in 1819 and the old Pastorie dated 1819.
• Markets: Browse and buy at the Firlands Farm Stall (art and crafts, steam train, farmyard, pub, bakery/coffee shop and mini-golf course) or the Country Craft Market which boasts around 150 unique handcraft stalls.
• Shopping: Somerset Mall offers every store the shopper's heart can dream of and desire. Plenty of places to eat out, and loads of entertainment too all in one massive shopping centre.
• Sports: Play golf at one of three excellent gold estates in Somerset West including the world renowned Erinvale. Sports lovers can also enjoy soccer, croquet, bowls, squash, tennis, cricket and hockey – and there’s even a pistol shooting range. Those who can’t stay away from the gym can head to the mega Virgin Active at Somerset Mall.
• Winelands: Somerset West has some of its own wine estates but with Stellenbosch just 20km away, the Paarl, Franschhoek and Wellington not much further, the wine lover will find plenty to delight the palate. Prefer beer? There’s also a brewery in the vicinity.
