Swellendam is a charming, pretty small town 240km from Cape Town, and as such a popular destination for weekends away, or a stop-over en route to other Overberg, Route 62 or Garden Route attractions.
The town is located at the base of the majestic Langeberg Mountains and has a fascinating colonial history, which means both natural beauty and fine examples of historic architecture dating back to the 1700s can be found here.
Visitors to Swellendam enjoy the serenity and sense of unhurried daily life, but it is far from boring and there is plenty to see, do and experience.
Swellendam Attractions
Many thanks to Klippe Rivier Country House for the following information on things to see and do in Swellendam.
-
Art & Craft: There is an Arts and Crafts Fair on the first Saturday of the month in Swellendam. Visit the Faerie Sanctuary for a fun and unusual outing little ones especially will enjoy.
-
Dine out: De Molen Pub and Bistro at the Rheenendal Mill and the Old Gaol restaurant under the oaks opposite the Moederkerk in the Main road are both recommended.
-
History: The Drostdy Museum, which is one of the best in the country. A stroll through the town will also reveal many examples of historical architecture. Klippe Rivier itself is Cape Dutch Country House, circa 1820, and was the family home of Free State Presidents Steyn and Reitz.
-
Nature & Adventure Activities: Visit the Bontebok National Park, sanctuary for the rare Bontebok. Take a walk to the waterfall in the Marloth Nature Reserve. Enjoy horse riding through the pine forests and proteas, or try canoeing or a glider flip to do some whale watching
-
Shopping: Visit Antiques and Things for lovers of old, beautiful items, Boo’s Toy shop, for the child in all of us, and Le Chocolat for unusual gifts and imported chocolates
-
Wine & liqueurs: Swellendam is best known for Youngberries (brame). You can pick your own at Wildebraam Berry Farm and you can also enjoy the delicious liqueur made here. Visit the nearby wineries on the Breede Valley wine route which has Wine Festivals throughout the year, which are loads of fun.
