• Darling: See a play by South Africa’s most famous satirist Pieter Dirk-Uys at his theatre, Evita se Perron. Lucky theatre-goers will get to meet the legendary Evita Bezuidenhout, SA comic, satirist and activist Dirk-Uys’s alter-ego. Attend South Africa’s ‘green’ music and lifestyle event, Rocking the Daisies, at the Cloof Wine Estate outside of Darling each year.
• Clanwilliam: Visit Elandsberg Eco Tourism Farm where you will find the original Rooibos Tea Farm, and they also sell homemade jams and breads if you don’t have time for lunch. Each spring there is a wildflower display in the Dutch Reformed Church which attracts thousands.
• Cederberg: Stunning rock and mountain formations, and one of the original haunts of the local San people, where their rock art may be viewed. Hike, walk or take a scenic drives and be sure to have your camera at the ready at all times.
• Langebaan: Take to the water – kite surfing in Langebaan is a popular pastime for visitors and locals alike.
• Paternoster: Visit the Cape Columbine Lighthouse, the last manned lighthouse, built in 1936.
• Riebeeck Kasteel: Enjoy wine tasting at one of the local estates, or trawl the picturesque village – you’ll be spoilt for choice when deciding where to have lunch as there are a number of wonderful eateries here. Visit De Oude Kerk Museum or the Jan Smuts Museum for a step back in time. The annual Olive Festival in Riebeeck Kasteel brings the village to life.
• Velddrif: At the West Coast Gallery, eat fresh seafood from the wood-fired grill, browse art and sculpture exhibitions and play boules under the shade of trees.
• Vredenburg: Spend a fascinating and informative day at the West Coast Fossil Park off the R45, Look for 5 million year old fossils at the sieving station. Café and play area for kids available.
• Yzerfontein: Stop at the Farm Stall for the best ever freshly baked scones.
