Golden sunlight lit the grasslands dotted with plains game, against a backdrop of lush green mountains. Arriving at the lodge I was blown away by the romance and pure Afro Colonial luxury. Thoughts of going hiking were instantly dashed. Instead, I curled up next to cosy fireplaces in the many intimate lounges and simply soaked in the ambience.

ABOUT Dawsons Game and Trout Lodge

Dawsons Game and Trout Lodge, near Barberton, Mpumalanga - “a place where the sun rises” - shelters beneath dramatic mountains, where waterfalls and perennial streams flow lazily from trout dam to trout dam. Surrounded by open space, this is a place where you can relish the freedom of timelessness, exploration and peace, while watching the sun dance across the open plains and the large herds of zebra, impala, springbok, blesbuck, eland and wildebeest, slowly wandering across the 2000 ha savanna.

Dawsons Game and Trout Lodge is a truly romantic African Colonial home with eight individually styled luxurious rooms. Expect cosy fireplaces, large Victorian-style bathrooms, percale linen, handpicked antique furniture, a walk-in closet, heated towel rails and a choice of king size or twin beds.

The wrap around veranda with its stunning views creates an African ambience harking back to the grandeur of the Colonial era, with three cosy lounges, roaring fireplaces, dining room, library, bar and TV room. Dinner each evening is a celebration. And for a romantic brunch or lunch, a sumptuous picnic basket can be enjoyed at one of the trout dams, on the lawn, under the trees or at one of the many secluded picnic spots on the farm.

At Dawson’s, there’s always enough to keep you busy too... quad bike trails, archery, fishing, hiking and walking trails, mountain biking, birdwatching, hot-air ballooning and helicopter flips. Bush drives also provide the opportunity to walk in the bush or enjoy a unique bush picnic on top of a hill overlooking the valley. Afterwards, indulge in a soothing massage in the comfort of your room, at the pool lapa or surrounded by nature.

Ideal for romantic getaways, special celebrations and a welcome break to or from Kruger Park, the Panorama Route, Swaziland and KZN.

The country comfortable Homestead and rustic Creekside Cottage offer a self-catering option for families and large parties.
