ABOUT Mackaya Bella Guest House

Calling the upmarket yet quirky suburb of Durban, Glenwood, home, Mackaya Bella is a lovely and friendly guest house offering professional service, comfortable rooms and good food. New owners Mike and Nicki have worked in hospitality for years, so you can expect a warm welcome and a home away from home.

The recently revamped six rooms in the main guest house each has its own character and colour scheme, with all the creature comforts such as air-conditioning, DStv, bar fridge , fluffy towels and tea and coffee facilities. The Family Room is located a few metres away from the main house, and is complete with a lounge and kitchen – the ideal family retreat. It also has its own veranda overlooking the sparkling pool. There are also two self-catering rooms designed for singles.

Solar-assisted geysers, energy-saving devices, a recycling project and other features help to make the guest house green-friendly, with a strong ethos geared towards minimising the footprint on the environment. Take a wander around the peaceful, indigenous garden, or enjoy a dip in the pool on warmer days. A scrumptious breakfast is served every morning in the main dining-room. There’s a delicious buffet spread and you can order a hot meal made to order.

The name “Mackaya Bella” comes from the indigenous shrub which grows near the main entrance and is known for flourishing in quiet environments – and this is just what you’ll find here: a little oasis tucked away from the busy world.

DIRECTIONS & MAP

Directions:

From King Shaka International Airport:

• Exit the airport following the directions to the N2 (South) and follow the N2 to Durban
(approximately 30 km) until you reach ‘spaghetti junction’, the four-level interchange with
the N3, and take the lane left to Durban
• Follow the directions below, as if driving from Pietermaritzburg

From the N3 from Pietermaritzburg:
• The third exit after the four-level interchange is Exit 3 / Berea Road / M13 Tollgate,
coming up a hill crested by the characteristic ‘Tollgate Bridge’ over the motorway. Take this
exit and proceed through the traffic light intersection with Peter Mokaba (Ridge) Road
(next to the bridge) down King Dinuzulu (Berea) Road North
• Here is a one-way road system. Cross the intersection with Stephen Dlamini
(Essenwood) Road (traffic lights), then turn right at the next intersection, Musgrave Road
(traffic lights). Cross the bridge over the freeway and immediately turn right again at the
traffic lights, up King Dinuzulu (Berea) Road South
• At the next intersection (traffic lights) turn left into Lena Ahrens (Manning) Road. Pass
straight through four intersections with traffic lights [the last being Alan Paton (Macdonald)
Road], then follow Lena Ahrens for another approximately 1km as it winds through the
suburb of Glenwood
• Look for Durban Girls High School on the left hand side, on the corner of Penzance Road.
Turn left into Penzance Road
• Mackaya Bella Guest House is the third house on the right hand side opposite the
school (turn around the central island)

From Port Shepstone on the N2:
• Approaching Durban past Amanzimtoti, as you pass the old Durban airport, the freeway splits, with the M4 to the Durban City Centre peeling off the N2
• Stay on the N2 with signs saying Stanger / KwaDukuza and King Shaka International Airport. After 3 km pass Exit 154 Higginson Highway
• After another 7 km take Exit 161 Edwin Swales Drive / Queensburgh
• At the traffic light turn right under the freeway into Edwin Swales Drive (M7)
• At the next traffic light (about 1 km), turn left into Vusi Mzimela (Bellair) Road. You pass Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital on your left hand side
• About 1 km further on, turn right at the next traffic light into Rick Turner (Francois) Road. This goes up a hill with the University at the top. Cross the traffic lights at Debonairs / Steers / KFC corner
• Turn left at 2nd road to the left into Lena Ahrens (Manning) Road
• Turn right at the second road into Penzance Road. Durban Girls High School is on the corner
• Mackaya Bella Guest House is the third house on the right hand side opposite the
school (turn around the central island)
