It’s like stepping into a scene from Out of Africa – dinner under the stars after hours exploring the bush from the saddle of a well-trained Arabian horse. Bush walks, clay target shooting and archery were also loads of fun. And the views from our mountain top suites were absolutely incredible.

ABOUT Pakamisa Private Game Reserve

From its commanding position atop Pakamisa Mountain in northern KZN, this exclusive lodge specialises in horseback safaris, with panoramic views over the malaria-free 2500 hectare private game reserve, the evergreen Pongola plains far below, and the Lebombo mountains and Swaziland beyond. Architectural inspiration has been drawn from colonial Spain and filled with an eclectic collection of African and European art. Spacious, luxury open-plan suites are extremely well-appointed with sitting areas, minibar, tea and coffee, large balcony with sweeping views, and generous bathrooms with gowns and slippers.

Choose a good book from the extensive library and meet new friends around the fireplace or in the cosy Hunters Bar before dinner. Meals are served in the elegant dining room, or enjoy a bush dinner à la “Out of Africa” under the stars. A superb Arabian stud offers a unique equestrian experience. Horse lovers will enjoy unforgettable rides through the reserve, experiencing Africa's wildlife at close quarters. Tailor-made activities include horseback safaris, game drives, bush walks, birding, botanical trails, archery, clay target and pellet gun shooting. Or simply relax at the swimming pool. Big Five game drives, boat cruises and tiger fishing on Jozini Dam can also be arranged. Ideal for travelling between Kruger Park, Swaziland, Durban and Mozambique.

"It was the perfect stop between Jo'burg and Tembe. The execution by Henrietta was flawless - food, wine, rooms, service - and the horse ride was very much enjoyed."

"We stayed at Pakamisa for the first time and what a find it was ! Looking for accommodation between Swaziland and St. lucia, we came across this location. It were the horses that triggered us, because we know how special it is to watch animals from a horseback. And, gosh, these horses were wonderful. Beautiful horses, well trained and well guided. We are not experienced in horse riding, but seriously enjoyed the morning rides. And if you 're not into horses we still advise you to visit Pakamisa, because of the stunning views and refined kitchen. This lodge blew us away and we will gladly come back. Thank you to all Pakamisa team."

"Thoroughly enjoyed our 3 night stay at Pakamisa. Although not a Big Five Reserve, this actually makes for a very relaxing stay, without the usual tearing around for Lions, Rhinos, Elephants etc at such reserves. Highlights were horse riding for my wife and a strenuous walk from the stables back to the Lodge, accompanied by Chamu, for me. Thanks to Isabella and all her staff for a very relaxing break."

"We promised ourselves we would return, and we weren't disappointed! The owners and staff could not be more welcoming and helpful. Nothing can be faulted, and we hope to return a third time!"

"Hi, I took my wife to Pakamisa for a two night stay over her birthday. We were truly impressed by the level of service as well as the general quality of the venue as well as the food. The staff were efficient yet friendly. Eventhough the service was great, it was also not overpowering which can cause discomfort. We did not participate in all the activities but those that we did were very pleasant i.e. game walk and drive. I would recommend the lodge for anyone looking for a very peaceful break, beautiful scenary and great food. Regards, Patrick"

"We had an absolutely fantastic time, the staff are extremely friendly and the place is spotlessly clean. I have rarely come across accommodation where there is such good attention to detail. We could not fault anything. The ambience is relaxed and the game rides absolutely amazing, the horses are a pleasure to ride. We cant wait to go back, Vicki, Nigel, Samantha (7) and Emma (4)."

"This is a place you just don't want to leave! After the rather daunting drive up the steep track, you see the views from every part of the reserve. You are welcomed by staff who cannot do enough for you, and taken to a magnificent suite, where everything you could want has been provided - you don't have to move from there, it is so comfortable! But, there is a good choice of activities led by knowledgeable staff, it is a pleasure to get out and explore the Reserve. The owners, Isabella and Anthony are splendid hosts, and the food is outstanding. We loved the place! (and hope to return)"
