Driving through the park on my way to the lodge I saw giraffe, rhino, great herds of buffalo and more. But hopping into their game drive vehicle a little later we were able to identify and appreciate so much more of the wildlife, birds and fauna. Arriving back at the lodge in a spectacular storm, we were greeted with hot chocolate, warm fireplaces and friendly smiles. Watching the lightning strobe the wilderness below was riveting, and the rain and cooler weather a great excuse for me to retire to my private bush villa, a luxurious bubble bath and crackling fire, bliss!

ABOUT Rhino Ridge Safari Lodge

Rhino Ridge Safari Lodge is situated on the western boundary in the first private concession within Africa’s oldest proclaimed game reserve, Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park. Experience the superior modern comfort of a private safari lodge for the first time within this 96 000ha reserve, with spectacular scenery from its commanding ridge-top position and excellent game drives, walking safaris and birding in the heart of Big Five territory. Teeming with game, home to more than 400 bird species and at the centre of rhino conservation, Hluhluwe-iMfolozi and Rhino Ridge Safari Lodge, part-owned by the local Mpembeni community, make for an ideal safari and conservation destination.

Contemporary design melds with organic, natural materials for a fresh, unique safari lodge experience. Bush Villas, Family and Safari rooms have private viewing decks, air-conditioning, minibars and showers that open onto the private deck for that al fresco feeling. Free standing stone baths and double-sided fireplaces add a sense of luxury and romance to the spacious Villas, while two Honeymoon Villas also have private plunge pools. Relax at the infinity lap pool or indulge in a treatment at the pool-side spa.

After rewarding afternoon and evening game drives with professional, enthusiastic guides, return to crackling fireplaces, canapes and pre-dinner drinks. Generous meals are served out on the deck overlooking the wilderness below, beneath starry skies in the boma or in the spacious glass-fronted dining area.

Days can also be spent exploring Zululand, with easy access to iSimangaliso Wetland Park, scuba diving at Sodwana Bay, Zulu culture and Battlefields. 3.5 hours from Durban.
