There is such a sense of history here. The lodge exudes a colonial farmhouse charm, and I was amazed to learn that this was the site of Winston Churchill’s campsite. Atop the nearby Spioenkop, owner Raymond Heron (F.R.G.S) brought the battle to life in what for me was an eye-opening and emotional experience.

ABOUT Spionkop Lodge (Spioenkop Lodge)

Spion Kop Lodge offers warm hospitality in the Battlefields and Drakensberg Region of KwaZulu-Natal, set in indigenous tranquil grounds on an eco farm. The perfect place from which to explore the bush, berg and Battlefields. Mount Alice, located on the farm, was General Buller’s Headquarters during the Anglo-Boer War (1899 to 1902) and also Winston Churchill’s camp site. Guests recall the history on specialised Battlefield tours, brought to life by Raymond Heron (F.R.G.S), renowned historian, raconteur and owner, and his son Alastair Heron.

The restored colonial-style farmhouse offers eight spacious bedrooms and a comfy country charm. The dining room offers magnificent views and good wholesome fare. Cosy pub, fascinating library and swimming pool. Opposite Spioenkop Dam and Nature Reserve, spend your time on sunset boat cruises, game viewing, horse riding, birding, hiking and fishing. First Drakensberg Visit
05 Jan 2015

"December 2014 was our first visit to the Drakensberg. From confirming our booking our hosts were gracious and welcoming. The staff were friendly and were always ready to give us anything we needed to make our stay comfortable. The setting is tranquil and beautiful and very close to the central mountains. This is an excellent location to really unwind and relax."

"Very hospitable hosts and excellent guided tour even in the rain. Self catering chalets will certainly benefit from planned upgrade."

a wonderful time at spioenkop
22 Jul 2013

"I had the pleasure ( with my family) of a 3 day stay at the lodge, July 3 thru July 5. The Heron's and their staff were wonderful hosts and they went way beyond normal lodgekeeper standards in making us comfortable. The attention to detail, letting us have a relaxed schedule for activities and meals, happened to make the end of our South Africa trip ( these three days ) the highlight of the whole trip. The battleground tour was great, the barbeque was a special treat, and the rooms were more than comfortable. I have and will continue to recomend Spioen Kop to all that I meet. By the way Portfolio was a pleasure to work with in planning this trip. thank you John Gerth"

A memorable wonderful place

"We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this wonderful little lodge. The hosts were very friendly creating a very nice family atmosphere, the food was superb (really nice to have proper home cooked food, simple but delicious, especially the soup!), the surroundings were lovely and the history of the lodge and the area fascinating. Our children loved running around the well-manicured garden and the play equipment kept them well entertained! We would definitely recommend a stay here and we would love to go back sometime."
