Visiting Tankwa River Lodge means going completely off the grid, something that can only lead to some serious switching off. This tranquil haven on a 2500 hectare farm in the vast and beautiful Karoo is your answer to some genuine down-time, and is perfect for that long, lazy weekend spent in the middle of nowhere.
The fact that there is no electricity in the farmhouse means you’ll have no choice but to slow down the minute you arrive (although some of the rooms do have solar power for lighting). The many open fireplaces make cosying up irresistible, with the outdoor fire pit being a popular gathering point.
Winter days are often mild and sunny but nights are freezing, since the Karoo is one of the coldest areas in the country. The summers being baking hot, so don’t forget to pack those slops and a kikoy or two. The small plunge pool provides welcome relief from the heat and the kids will be more than happy to cool off here. There is plenty of shade too, with comfy couches perfect for kicking back with a book or a board game.
The lodge is an eclectic mix of the many beautiful pieces and treasures that have been lovingly collected by the owners over the years. Think vintage kitchen ware, old cupboards, kelims covering the stone floors and Nguni hides over the simple screed. Lanterns burn bright at night, helping to light your way to bed.
The Tankwa National park is a short drive from the lodge, plus there are numerous 4x4 routes on the farm to be enjoyed. The farm is game rich, so you can expect to spot everything from kudu to springbok and gemsbok. Don’t forget that the Karoo is also home to the aardvark so be sure to keep those eyes peeled. There are six beautiful horses that call the farm home as well (two of which are rescues) and it’s wonderful to watch them arrive for their food around 5pm every day - kids especially will delight in this ritual. The adults can then enjoy a sundowner or two as the sun goes down over the dessert expanse.
Tankwa River Lodge provides your ideal escape from reality.
