The Cavern is a wonderful Drakensberg property. Run by the Bedinghams, the family feel is so welcoming and it is no wonder many families return year after year. There is something very special about being tucked away at the top of a secluded valley. The table d’hote menu for dinner works incredibly well with the food being truly outstanding, and the professionalism and friendliness of the staff is palpable. There are so many wonderful guided walks, 150km of mountain bike trails and loads of activities for all ages. Can’t wait to return – hopefully with my bike next time.

ABOUT The Cavern Resort & Spa

This award-winning family resort is situated on a private mountain reserve, adjacent to the Amphitheatre World Heritage Site. The Cavern is set in a secluded valley beneath the massive sandstone cliffs of the Northern Drakensberg. The thatched honeymoon suites, superior rooms and standard accommodation blend into the landscape and have spectacular views of the surrounding valleys, indigenous forests and mountains.

The Cavern is home to numerous Bushman paintings, 213 species of birds, 150 species of trees and numerous wild animals. Daily guided hikes are offered to Cannibal Cavern, Lone Rock and Sungubala, amongst others. For the energetic, walks are organised to the Tugela Gorge and to the top of the Amphitheatre. Other activities include horse and mountain bike trails, trout-fishing and tennis. Relax at the pool or in the serene Forest Spa overlooking the fern forest, while the kids are engaged in fun daily activities and games. Enjoy pre-dinner drinks in the unique, cosy Cave Bar and choose a favourite wine from the wine cellar.
