Along the shores of Lake Tanganyika in western Tanzania, you'll find the small and remote Mahale Mountains National Park. It is home to the largest known chimpanzee population in the country - almost 1700 chimpanzees live within its borders. It is also the only place where you can see chimpanzees in their natural habitat.
Here, lions and chimpanzees peacefully co-exist in a scene from an animated Pixar movie. It is one of the few parks in Africa that is best experienced on foot rather than from the confines of a game drive vehicle. You'll take a fully guided, two day trek through the mountains for an up close encounter with these fascinating creatures. The feeling of looking in what seems to be a slightly distorted mirror is spine tingling.
