Discover Quirimba Island and its surrounds
Arrive at Pemba International Airport before being whisked away by a light aircraft to Ibo Island Lodge, your first glimpse from the air of the beauty and turquoise waters of Mozambique. The town is over 200 years old and is a fascinating place to explore as you wander around the mysterious ruins and ancient forts that each tells its own story. Enjoythe Ibo Island Guided Experience that provides the perfect opportunity to get to know the town and its culture and heritage, all while mingling with the friendly locals. The lodge boasts incredible views across the waterfront and today bay, and seamlessly combines colonial charm with modern island living.
Head north from Ibo into the Quirimbas Archipelago as you sail across the sparkling blue waters. The amazing underwater world of brightly coloured corals and mesmerising marine creatures is waiting to be explored as you snorkel the depths just off shore. There’s no better way to truly appreciate the beauty of your surrounds than onboard a dhow and the early morning sail up the Ulumbwa estuary gives you the opportunity to view a variety of birds and mangroves that thrive in this part of the world. In the afternoon, take a guided tour through the fishing village as you see the ways of the fisher folk for yourself. Lastly, you’ll stop on the southern tip of Matemo Island where you will do some more exploring before settling in at camp.
Depart Matemo Island in the morning for your exploration south into the Quirimbas Archipelago, also by dhow of course. Upon reaching Quirimba Island, you’ll get to know the interesting island that gave the archipelago its name and its surrounds. The rural villages, culture and old church give Quirimba its distinct character and after spending some time here, you’ll be able to enjoy it. Camp overnight at base before taking a day trip by dhow to Quisiva Island (or similar) and/or Mefunvo Island for more exploring.
You’ll make your way back to Ibo Island for further discoveries of this captivating island before enjoying your final night at the lodge. Toast to an island-hopping adventure to remember from your veranda or the famous rooftop restaurant – the ideal spot to enjoy a drink as the sun goes down.
Once again, you’ll be transferred by light aircraft from Ibo Island to Pemba International Airport before catching your outbound flight home.
