Cape Agulhas travel guide

Cape Agulhas Highlights

The following ideas of activities in and around Cape Agulhas were suggested by Ocean Art Guest House.

  • Southernmost point of Africa - Although Cape Point in the Cape Peninsula gets more attention, Agulhas is the actual place where the two oceans collide and as such the plaque on the wind-swept beach announcing that you are as far south in Africa as you can ever be on land is a must-see and a great photo opportunity.
  • Beach walk - After viewing the tip of the continent, take a leisurely stroll down the second longest stretch of white uninterrupted beach in the Southern Hemisphere.
  • Boat trip - ask you guest house host to help you arrange a boat trip to get closer to whales in season, and to view Agulhas from beyond the breakers.
  • Eat out - when on holiday it's always great to try good local restaurants. Ocean Art House have their own inhouse eatery serving delicious dinners to their guests. They also recommend Pelicans' Harbour Café and the Lighthouse Restaurant as alternative places to get a decent meal. For something different, try the Sugar and Spice Deli, or best yet, picnic at De Mond Nature Reserve,
  • Enjoy nature - One of the best things about Cape Agulhas is its unspoilt natural beauty. Make the most of it by hiking, walkingm bird watching and fishing (check about permits with your host) in the  three reserves in the vicinity: De Mond Nature Reserve, De Hoop Nature Reserve and Cape Agulhas Nature Reserve.
  • Lighthouse - lighthouses are undeniably fascinating and somehow romantic, yet crammed with history and stories of disaster and heroism. the lighthouse at Cape Agulhas is the second oldest working lighthouse in South Africa.
  • Shop - What's a weekend away without the purchase of something that reminds you of the place? Visit the South Bound Lifestyle Shop before heading home for gifts and clothes.
  • Whale watching - the whole Overberg region is renowned for excellent whale watching in season (Autumn to Spring) - watch the whales cavort in the waves from the shore or from a boat. (see boat trip above)
