Overberg travel guide

Head out of Cape Town, past Somerset West and over Sir Lowry’s Pass and enter a land of apple and pear orchards, gentle rolling hills, idyllic pastoral scenes where sheep graze against a backdrop of farm houses and where, along the coast, whales frolic in the waves. This is the Overberg, a special region that stretches from the Indian Ocean at Cape Agulhas (the southernmost tip of Africa) to the Langeberg Mountains.

Overberg Highlights

  • Fruit Picking – Well known for the numerous orchards from which fruit is exported around the world, the Overberg is a great place enjoy the thrill of eating apples straight from the tree – look out for ‘pick your own’ opportunities, or visit in spring to marvel at the blossoms. Popular fruit picking areas include Ashton.
  • Hot Springs – Visit the hot springs at Caledon for a day playing and relaxing in a variety of pools and Jacuzzis filled with mineral rich hot spring water.
  • Nature Reserves – Walker Bay Nature Reserve near De Kelders has caves where some of the oldest remains of modern man have been found. De Hoop Nature Reserve offers 34 000 ha of pristine reserve – cycle and hike or watch birds and whales.
  • Ocean Encounters - Whale watching is one of the biggest draw cards to the Overberg, especially to charming Hermanus, one of the best land based whale watching places in the world. Get even closer to nature with a shark cage dive at Gansbaai.
  • Outdoor Activities – There’s a lot for the outdoor types in the Overberg - birding, hiking, water skiing, horse riding, and golf are all available.
  • Quaint towns and villages – Places such as Swellendam, Genadendal, Greyton and Heidelberg maintain the charm of days gone by with their pretty churches and historically fascinating architecture. Along the coast, Pringle Bay, Stanford, Sandbaai, Kleinmond and De Kelders have traditional seaside village appeal.
  • Tip of Africa - Cape Agulhas is a fascinating place to visit – there are not many places in the world where you can stand with each foot in a different ocean! Visit the lighthouse or enjoy long beach hikes.
  • Wine Tasting – although the Overberg is outside of the renowned Stellenbosch / Franschhoek / Paarl winelands region it has a thriving viticulture industry and a number of great opportunities for wine tasting and wine purchasing! Hermanus and McGregor are worth checking out if you love good wine.
