Oudtshoorn travel guide

Oudtshoorn is a Klein Karoo town at the far end of Route 62, and well worth a visit if you enjoy unique holiday experiences. Where else can you ride an ostrich, dive with a crocodile and go on a meerkat safari all in one area? Oudtshoorn is also home to the spectacular Cango Caves, Africa's largest show cave system. It is in the vicinity of an ecological hotspot where three distinct plant biomes (succulent karoo, cape thicket and fynbos) converge, and is situated alongside the impressive Swartberg mountain range, which is part of the Cape Floral World Heritage Site.

Oudtshoorn Highlights

  • Ride an Ostrich – once the ostrich capital of the world, Oudtshoorn and ostriches are synonymous to this day. Visit one of the ostrich farms, stand on an ostrich egg, buy a feather duster – all of these are compulsory activities for any first time visitor to Oudtshoorn
  • Try a Meerkat Safari - De Zeekoe Guest Farm in Oudtshoorn offers daily wild habituated meerkat tours. These tours that commence at sunrise and are weather dependent.  Meerkats form part of the so-called Shy 5, which also includes the bat-eared fox, the aardvark, porcupine and aardwolf. The meerkat tours last between 2-3 hours and booking is essential.
  • Dive with crocodiles - This is a wild experience offered at the Cango Wildlife Ranch. You'll be quite safe in your specially designed cage when you are lowered into a crystal clear heated pool inhabited by 4-meter crocodiles. A dive will last approximately 10 minutes, but seeing the snapping jaws of a 4m long Nile croc is sure to give you an adrenalin rush of note for hours afterwards!
  • Explore the Cango Caves - 29km from Oudtshoorn, the Cango Caves are situated in a limestone ridge parallel to the Swartberg Mountains. Discover dripstone caverns, with their vast halls and towering formations.
  • Take an Oudtshoorn hot air balloon ride at sunrise and see the beauty of the Karoo from a different perspective.
  • Hike through naturally beautiful landscapes. The Swartberg Mountain range region has been nominated as a future World Heritage Site and is one of the Cape Floral Region Protected areas. Succulent lovers will enjoy exploring the Gamkaberg Nature Reserve in the Red Mountain Range.
