 North West Province Travel Map

Bordering the Kalahari Desert to the west, rimmed by the mighty Vaal River in the South and extending to the craggy, scenic hills of the Magaliesberg in the northeast, the North West Province is a treasure trove for travellers. Spot the Big Five in the malaria-free Madikwe and Pilansberg Game reserves – two of the few places where springbok and impala are found naturally together where the Kalahari meets the Highveld.  Madikwe is home great safari and game lodges including Thakadu, Tuningi, The Bush House and Buffalo Ridge.

Amble along the banks of The Groot Marico discovering the quirky characters of this artistic community, as epitomised in the writings of Herman Charles Bosman featuring his famous character Herman Charles Bosman. Sun City’s Lost City Golf Course is a golfer’s paradise, famous for the Million Dollar Golf Challenge.

Dust off the Boer War history books and rediscover the remarkable story of the Siege of Mafikeng.  It was in Mafikeng that Colonel Baden-Powell (who later founded the international Scouting movement) and his British troops held out against the Boer forces that encircled the town in 1899. The siege lasted for a remarkable 217 days until British reinforcements eventually arrived to relieve Mafikeng - a significant British victory and a bitter defeat for the Boers. Sol Plaatje (who later co-founded the Native National Congress which was to become the ANC) wrote his notable “The Boer War Diary of Sol T Plaatje: an African at Mafikeng” during the siege.  The diary was only discovered after his death, but gives a fascinating account of life during the siege - worth a read if you can find a rare copy which is now called "Mafikeng Diary."

Beneath the scattered trees and grasslands of the North West Province lie some of the worlds richest platinum reserves for which the province is affectionately nicknamed “The Platinum Province.” Aside from its immense mineral wealth, sheep, cattle, maize and tourists are farmed! Being a mere 2 hours’ drive from Johannesburg, and boasting a hot, dry climate – sunscreen year round – means that the North West is a popular destination. Book ahead to ensure that you get your slice of sunshine!

Summer temperatures are between 22 and 34 degrees Celsius and winter averages about 16 degrees, although nights are often chilly so don’t forget the winter woolies. Summer is characterised by brief, dramatic, late afternoon thundershowers.
