10 incredible Portfolio places that would get the thumbs up from mama

Mother’s Day 2017 is already next month (where is the year going??) and if you’re wondering how to spoil that mama of yours, we believe a special getaway always goes down a treat. We’ve chosen 10 Portfolio places that we think are the kind that will knock her socks off – because sometimes all you need is a little inspiration…

1. Summerfields Rose Retreat & Spa (Hazyview)

With a spa, two award-winning restaurants, luxury tented accommodation and the sweet smell of roses in the air, Summerfields offers an all-round incredible experience. Raised wooden walkways lead you to your spacious tent on the banks of the Sabie River where natural elements combine seamlessly with contemporary touches to deliver sanctuaries sheltered by Tambotie and Jackalberry trees, while foodies will get their culinary fix with meals produced using fresh produced grown in Summerfields’s very own organic garden. Relax and unwind at the onsite spa... Bliss.

Our best: The uniquely designed bathrooms that offer outdoor showers and baths, with a special bath menu to boot! The new timber Forest Room is particularly “mom worthy” with its open-plan design and deck, perfect for taking in the sights and sounds of nature.

2. Khaya Ndlovu Manor House (Hoedspruit)

If it’s a combination of a bush adventure, modern luxury and a romantic escape you’re after, then Khaya Ndlovu will satisfy these needs and more. Sweeping views of the Northern Drakensberg Mountains will delight, while perfectly landscaped indigenous gardens help to set the tone for a calm and relaxing stay a short way from the beautiful Blyde River Canyon and famed Kruger National Park. With only five rooms available, you’re assured a more intimate and undisturbed safari experience – it’ll be like your very own manor house in the bush.

Expect: Sundowners overlooking the waterhole, soaking up the rays on the pool terrace and massages surrounded by nature, all while being enchanted by that familiar colonial charm.

3. Bliss Boutique Hotel (Cape Town)

Ocean breezes, Cape fynbos, chic spaces, access to a private beach… These are just a few of the amazing ingredients that come together to bring you this luxury seaside escape. Just 20 minutes from central Cape Town, it’s far enough for you to slip easily into holiday mode and with all the comforts of home on offer, coupled with attentive staff, city life will simply melt into the background. Delicious dining is available at the onsite restaurant, Beach & Bites, while the two viewing decks offer views of Table Mountain and are the ideal spot to catch a sunset, signature cocktail in hand. The spa and solar-heated pool are the cherries on top.

The ultimate comfort: A specially designed Pillow Menu means you can choose the pillow that works best for you, which means a guaranteed amazing night’s sleep. Um, yes please!

4. Canelands Beach Club & Spa (KwaZulu-Natal)

Sometimes, only the sound of waves crashing will do as the perfect lullaby when it’s time to turn in. And at Canelands, this is exactly what you’ll get. Situated in the upmarket region of Salt Rock on KwaZulu Natal‘s North (Dolphin) Coast and literally a few steps away from the beach, it’s the ultimate in modern beach hotels. Watch dolphins frolicking in the water while kicking back poolside, in between recharging your batteries with a spa treatment and indulging in some of the freshest seafood off the menu – we think mom will more than approve!

We love: The mangongo Healing Earth body treatment that is a detoxifying body oil, polish and balm made with the traditionally lauded vitamin-and-anti-oxidant-rich mangongo nut.

5. Milkwood Manor on Sea (Plettenberg Bay)

Nothing quite beats a little Georgian-styled manor by the sea! Milkwood is as charming as it is inviting, with gorgeous sea views and the majestic Tsitsikamma Mountains providing a picture-perfect backdrop. The Garden Route is renowned for its natural beauty and you get to experience it in all its glory here, from enjoying ocean or Keurbooms Lagoon dips, to long beach walks and kayaking for those wanting to experience the outdoors in a different way. The popular in-house Lemon Grass Seaside Restaurant serves up an array of tasty dishes so there’s no chance of going hungry during your peaceful stay.

The place to be: The terrace, watching the birds and sipping on a glass of wine as the waves crash beyond.

6. O on Kloof (Cape Town)

If mom is more into all things urban, this sophisticated boutique hotel and spa offers a 5-Star city experience. The modern and minimalist design is the epitome of urban chic, with bursts of different colours and textures only elevating the overall stylishness that permeates the space. The sun-drenched deck and outdoor entertainment patio offer panoramic views of the cityscape, with the Bar and Lounge at O on Kloof providing a chic spot for that sundowner or night cap. Its convenient location also makes it an excellent base from which to explore the various sites and attractions of the electric Mother City.

You must try: One of the O Spa’s Signature Experiences such as the African shea aroma-therapeutic massage.

7. African Vineyard Guesthouse (Upington, Northern Cape)

This is indeed a very special place. Set on the banks of the Orange River on the largest inhabited inland island in South Africa, Kanoneiland, just outside Upington, this farm stay experience is the best place from which to get a taste of the Green Kalahari in the Northern Cape. You can expect a superb blend of country hospitality, a laid-back atmosphere and modern accommodation all made even better by the high quality of service on offer, not to mention the incredible “slow food” cuisine. The parklike gardens are truly something, only adding to the truly spectacular setting. Mom is bound to love this spot!

Go adventuring: The guest house is en-route to the legendary Augrabies Falls (approximately 105km away) so it’s definitely worth taking a day trip to see this amazing feat of nature. And for a little pampering: take advantage of the indoor and outdoor treatment areas while indulging in an African spa experience to remember.

8. Excelsior Manor Guest House (Ashton, Western Cape)

Escape to the exquisite Robertson Wine Valley and experience this fifth generation family home for yourself in all its grace and splendour. Wake up each morning to the sweeping vineyard views and Langeberg Mountains in the distance, before spending the day lazing beside the sparkling pool positioned on an elevated wooden deck. The classically decorated bedrooms offer elegant comfort during your stay, while scrumptious farm breakfasts and delicious dinners ensure your taste buds are always satisfied too. The fresh valley air will leave you feeling refreshed and rejuvenated, even after a short visit.

For the vinophiles: You’re able to blend, bottle and label your very own wine creation in Excelsior’s tasting room while overlooking the farm dam and its frequent birdlife – a special keepsake to remind you of your wonderful stay.

9. Camps Bay Retreat (Cape Town)

Picture this: a grand historic house nestled in a lush forest complete with waterfalls and streams, and all the trimmings that come with estate living - this is Camps Bay Retreat, one of Camps Bay’s best kept secrets. Bordering the Table Mountain National Park with four pools, a fine dining restaurant and terrace offering Atlantic Ocean views, it’s like a little piece of paradise tucked away and ready to help you leave all your worries behind. Old-world charm meets luxury, serenity and sophistication in the most natural of settings ensuring you leave feeling as if you’ve been away for years.

Pampering that’s second to none: The spa features two special nature baths on a wooden deck together with a range of treatments, sauna and natural mountain pool a short walk away – undoubtedly a “sanctuary for the soul”!

10. And for a real splurge: Bush Lodge At Hidden Valley (Stellenbosch)

This luxury and exclusive three-bedroom lodge that calls a boutique wine farm hidden on the slopes of the Helderberg Mountains home, is a sophisticated self-catering option that will make mom feel like a queen. Designer finishes, all the mod cons you could wish for and of course, stellar views, make the lodge feel like it belongs in the pages of a magazine, while the pool and deck area (complete with sun lounges) makes for the ultimate relaxation spot. After a day of wine estate hopping, hiking, picnicking, or exploring the Stellenbosch area, return to the quiet of your secluded and private lodge to unwind in the lap of luxury. The lodge sleeps six so that means mom will be able to be joined by a few other special people in her life for a memorable celebration.

On your doorstep: Wine and olive tastings can be enjoyed at Hidden Valley Wines, as can cellar tours and all of the creations in the sculpture studio.

If none of these tickle your fancy (although we can’t think why not?!?!), contact our helpful reservations team who will be happy to assist you in finding a suitable spot to spoil mom, not just over Mother’s Day weekend, but all year round.
