6 Things to do on Route 62

When travelling from Cape Town to the Garden Route, Route 62 makes for a very interesting alternative. Starting at Worcester just off the N1, the road is often much quieter than the N2 and winds it's way through mountain ranges and past fruit orchards with beautiful views at every turn until you reach the ostrich oasis of Oudtshoorn.

Along the way there are sweet small towns to explore, home-baked farmstall goodies to taste and plenty of wineries to enjoy - this being the "longest wine route in the world"

But it's not all about the drive, when you need to stretch your legs or make the holiday start from the moment you begin your journey then you might like this list of Things to do on Route 62...

1. Karoo Desert National Botanical Garden, Worcester

Against the backdrop of the Hex River Mountain Range, lies a unique garden that cultivates and displays plants from all the arid and semi-arid regions of southern Africa. Only 11 of the 154 hectares are cultivated and the remaining area is comprised of natural vegetation with two hiking trails, the 1km Shale trail and 3.4km Grysbokkie trail. Guided tours of the collections and/or garden can be arranged for groups. The garden is home to a fascinating succulent collection and is the ideal setting for picnics, bird-watching or enjoying a meal at the Kokerboom Restaurant. There is also a nursery that stocks indigenous water-wise plants.
Spring is the most popular time to visit the garden when the annuals and vygies (mesembs) are in flower.

3. Ronnies Sex Shop, near Barrydale

Ronnie's Sex Shop has had visitors from all over the world, judging by the graffiti on it's wall. Over the years it has become a popular pitstop for bikers, local farmers and people travelling Route 62 regularly. The story of how the name came into being is now local legend. Ronnie painted the name Ronnie's Shop on this cottage next to the R62, planning to open a farm stall to sell fresh produce and fruit. His friends played a prank on him by changing the name to Ronnie's Sex Shop. Initially angry about the involuntary name change, he left the name and continued fixing the dilapidated building. One evening while enjoying a few beers and couple of chops on the braai with friends, someone suggested "Why don't you just open a pub?"And the rest is history!
