Durban International Film Festival 2012

DIFF is a feast of great cinema that includes numerous award-winners from around the world. The exciting and varied line-up comprises feature films, relevant documentaries, short films and thrilling surfing films at the associated Wavescape Surf Film Festival.

In addition free filmmaker seminars, workshops and public discussion forums are offered for professionals, aspirants and any member of the public interested in the inner workings of the film industry.

The festival hosts a number of film industry development initiatives such as Talent Campus Durban and Durban FilmMart.

Most of the films will have their premiere showings at DIFF.  Visit the film pages at or sign up to @DIFFest on twitter for helpful hints and your own guided tour of this year’s electrifying programme.

Further detail is contained in the festival catalogue obtainable at principal cinema venues during the festival.

Elelwani is the film that will open the curtains of this year's event on 19th July. Directed by Ntshavheni wa Luruli and produced by Florian Schattauer, Elelwani deals with the collision of modernity and traditionalism, through an updated, magical realist take on the very first and much loved Tshivenda novel of the same name. Against a backdrop of startling primary colours and rich ochre hues, young Elelwani (perfectly played by the beautiful Florence Masebe) must negotiate her transition into fully-fledged womanhood amidst the conflicting flows of rigidly patriarchal cultural protocol, and opportunities that may offer her a chance to grow in new ways, but that will sever her from her roots.
