We’re live in a country so diverse in its landscapes, people and places that it can be hard to decide where and how to holiday. In addition to this, the way we travel has changed significantly in the past year. So where to start when you want to get away? From safari adventures in the bush, to romantic glamping getaways, city staycations, and soul-rejuvenating mountain retreats, here are our travel recommendations for 2021.
Farm stay charm
Farm stays guarantee wide open spaces, scrumptious provincial fare, and country hospitality, making them perfect for travel in today's climate. Most farm accommodation is on actual working farms so you get a first-hand experience of the daily workings and a true taste of farm living. Don’t be fooled though: a farm stay is not about “roughing it” – our farm stays have luxury lodging and beautiful facilities so you can live that country life in comfort and style.
Some of our farm stay picks:
- Bartholomeus Klip Farmhouse (Boland)
- Rouxwil Country House (Greyton)
- Kralinbergh Guest House (Ermelo)
- Libertas Guest Farm (Wilderness)

Stay your own way with self-catering
With social distancing here to stay, self-catering gives you a safe space that feels like a fancier, less harassed version of home. You can choose when, what and how when it comes to meals, excursions and activities; this is especially useful if you're travelling with a large group (anyone else feel like going on holiday with their family is like herding cats!?). Self-catering stays are usually great value for money as you can fit your activities and experiences into your budget.
Some of our self-catering picks:
- Rock Shandy Stone Cottage (South Coast)
- Heuglins (White River)
- Paternoster Manor Boutique Guest House (Paternoster)
- Whaleshaven 14 (Plettenberg Bay)

Waking up to the gentle hiss of waves on the sand is for most people a life lesson in relaxation. A seaside holiday with its endless, sun-drenched beach days, invigorating salt air and braais on the patio, is what South African summers are made for. Beach stays are often inspired by their surroundings with cool whites and blues dominating the palette, while white-washed floors, abstract paintings and rustic shell ornaments sing an ode to the ocean.
Some of our beachfront picks:
- Thonga Beach Lodge (Zululand and Elephant Coast)
- The Resort at Cape St. Francis(St Francis Bay)
- Fairlight Beach House (North Coast)
- Sea Star Lodge (Gansbaai)
- The Beach Hotel (Port Elizabeth)
Family holidays are filled with moments and memories that chronicle the path of kids growing up. They're about spending quality time with those you love the most, preferably in a beautiful place where there’s plenty to do. Resorts often have the most to offer as everything is on-site, from dining options to activities to babysitting. The all-in-one package price makes budgeting easy and the entertainment for kids means Mom & Dad get some downtime to themselves.
Some of our family friendly picks:
- De Hoop Collection (Cape Overberg)
- Penhill Manor (Robertson)
- Sandals Guest House (St Francis Bay)
- Hog Hollow Country Lodge and Villa (The Crags)
Safari adventure in the bush
If there’s one thing South Africa is famous for, it’s bush holidays. With a plethora of well-known reserves and private concessions and an impressive list of fabulous lodges, a South African safari adventure is something every local should have the chance to experience. Spot the Big 5 on game drives, take a guided walks through the bush and enjoy delicious meals ith fellow guests served around the campfire in or a traditional boma. We have a range of safari lodges for all budgets and group sizes, so you can travel with peace of mind and full pockets.
Remember: The best time to head to the bush in South Africa is during the dry season (May – October, with July being the best month) which is prime time for animal viewing. This is because at this time, there is a lack of grass and thick bush which helps to increase visibility. Wildlife and birds tend to congregate around limited water sources further making it easy to spot them.
Some of our picks of private game reserves & safari lodges:
- Makweti Safari Lodge (Welgevonden PGR)
- The Bush House (Madikwe GR)
- Bukela Game Lodge (Amakhala Game Reserve)
- Kaingo Game Reserve (Waterberg)
- Gorah Elephant Camp (Addo Elephant National Park)
Camping with a twist – hello glamping!
In recent years camping has been kicked up a notch (or five) with the advent of “glamping” – a more glamorous and luxury version of this much-loved outdoor experience. Instead of air mattresses, you have comfy beds complete with plush linens and bedding. Instead of communal ablutions, you have your very own bathroom, often with a view. And instead of having to rough it in general, you’ll have all the luxuries of home. Essentially, you get to experience all the wonders of being out in nature without having to give up those creature comforts – what could be better?
Whilst we don’t have (strictly-speaking) glamping spots, we can offer you a luxury tented experience – take a look below at some options:
Some of our tented camp picks:
- Pafuri Camp (Kruger National Park)
- White Elephant Bush Camp (Zululand and Elephant Coast)
- Mount Camdeboo Private Game Reserve (Graaff-Reinet)
Staycation in the city
Sometimes you actually don’t need to go very far to enjoy a break away from it all and this is when a staycation can be just the ticket. Just a short two-night stay somewhere local, even if it’s simply within your home city, can feel like a proper holiday. We love boutique hotels and intimate guest houses for the feeling of exclusivity and being waited on like a VIP. Pick an area you're not too familiar with and gain some new perspectives on your city. All of our city stays are COVID-19 compliant and we can recommend activities away from the madding crowds.
Some of our staycation picks:
- Ellerman House (Cape Town)
- Fairlawns Boutique Hotel & Spa (Johannesburg)
- Camps Bay Retreat (Camps Bay)
- The View Boutique Hotel (Johannesburg)
- The Oyster Box (Umhlanga Rocks)
There comes a time in your life when all you want to do leave all the stress, pressure and fast pace of life far behind, especially after a year like 2020. It's time to head to a retreat stay where you can fully relax your body and mind as you disconnect from your hectic lifestyle. Our retreat of choice is somewhere in the mountains, but we have a range of options to choose from according to what retreat means to you.
Some of our retreat picks:
- Angala (outside Franschhoek)
- The Retreat at Groenfontein (Oudtshoorn)
- Fairview (The Crags)
- Comfrey Cottage (Eastern Cape)
