If you’re a beer lover, you simply have to take a trip to the Newlands Brewery (in Cape Town) or SAB World of Beer (in Johannesburg) and enjoy one of the interesting (and tasty) tours on offer. In fact SAB World of Beer has recently launched a brand new tour set to knock your socks off.
Our res superstar, Angelo, recently visited the Newlands Brewery so why not follow his lead?...
It was a sunny day here in the Mother City, the perfect weather for popping over to the Newlands Brewery for one of their tours (or "beer experience", as they like to call it) where I hoped to broaden my knowledge about the cold beverage that I love so much (and which is a staple in so many South African homes).
We were greeted by happy and friendly staff who clearly love what they do as much as beer lovers love their beer. We donned our mandatory safety gear (don’t worry - it’s only goggles, an apron and an ear piece for sound so that you don’t miss any of the important information shared by your guide during the tour) and we were ready to go.
Once we were all suited up the roughly 40-minute tour began with an introduction to the history of the brewery and its brands. We then moved on to learning about how the beers are brewed, for how long, the significance of the beverage and some interesting tidbits. For example, did you know that Black Label beer smells like banana? True story.
You also get to come face to face with the monster machines and containers that each plays a significant role in the beer-making process. Once you see them with your own eyes and it’s explained to you how they work, you'll have a whole new appreciation for the thought, science, love and patience that goes into creating this much loved beverage. Even the packaging process is explained, so you really do get a clear idea of the entire journey from start to finish.
After an interesting and informative tour through the brewery, it’s time to taste! You’ll get to sample a variety of SAB beers while an experienced guide explains the benefits and ingredients that go into each. Not only is this a delicious end to the tour, but it’s fascinating too.
With your brain suitably filled with lots of beer-related information, nothing beats kicking back with your favourite draught from the tasting. It’s also a great opportunity to ask any questions you may still have – but seeing as it’s a pretty conclusive tour, chances are you’ll be left feeling satisfied and happy. Or maybe that’s the beer talking…
