A team from Jacobs, under the guidance of renowned SA artist James Delaney will be creating a mosaic of Nelson Mandela out of 5000 coffee cups. Last year, the team made a mosaic from 2 700 cups (shown in the accompanying images) so this year's attempt should be twice as impressive!
This year, members of the public can dedicate a message to Madiba on one of the cups. All messages will be sent to the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory for archiving. Visit Jacobs Krönung South Africa to submit your message.
In addition to this spectacle, which members of the public can watch while enjoying a free cup of Jacobs coffee from Jacobs Connect Café, there will be a mini board game cafe set up where volunteers will spend their 67 minutes teaching underprivileged children how to play games such a Scrabble, Chess and Monopoly.
Please consider bringing along a new or used board game, puzzle or book to donate - and feel free to join in playing with the kids at the café.
While you're at this fun family friendly event, take an hour to go on a guided tour of Constitution Hill.
A spokesperson from Jacobs says:
"We hope that the work our team will be putting into the artwork will inspire people to give of their time on Mandela Day to improve someone else’s life. 67 minutes is not a lot of time – but you’ll be amazed at the difference it’ll make in someone’s life"
