Marie Theron-Documenting the Real West Coast in Paint and Words

Every artist will at some stage be inspired by the views from their studio windows.

Artist Marie Theron has settled on the West Coast after a long career in teaching, lecturing in watercolours at the Bellville Art Centre, illustrating stationery and books and holding solo exhibitions, both locally and abroad.

From her studio she looks out onto Table Mountain, the displays of spring flowers and the rows of salted snoek drying in the sea breeze. She became aware of the true West Coast,  a neglected subject among artists who take shortcuts with the staid formula of idealized ‘west coast cottages’.

In April 2009 she started a personal journey, documenting in paint every interesting aspect of this beloved area.

Today, there are more than 60 West Coast paintings, along with their stories, on blog called: Artist Marie Theron chronicles the West Coast of South Africa.  Viewers from all over the globe have commented on and appreciated the towns and surrounding regions of Darling, Yzerfontein, Langebaan, Riebeek Kasteel, Malmesbury and Piketberg (and many more to come) as seen and described through the eyes of the artist.

Grab a cup of coffee and visit Marie Theron's fascinating blog for all her West Coast paintings and stories - but make sure you have time to spare - the West Coast is a timeless region that cannot be rushed through, even if you are only, for now, a virtual visitor.
