Gilbert & Sullivan with a twist
For some light relief on these chilly winter nights, Tospy Turvy is just the thing and includes well-known snippets of music and lyrics from the Pirates of Penzance, the Mikado and Iolanthe, with a charming Victorian frieze to offset the scenes.
Fresh from his triumphant “Phantom” performances in Johannesburg (where it was seen by a record-breaking 250 000 people), the highly talented 25-year old Jonathan Roxmouth is currently back in Cape Town in a polished and professional one-man Gilbert & Sullivan show, with a difference.
Topsy Turvy is witty and versatile and Jonathan acts and sings male and female roles from a variety of operettas with great aplomb, adding contemporary satirical lyrics, under the the able direction of Alan Swerdlow. One needs to listen carefully or you might miss some of the clever contemporary political references such as one about The Spear and more.
The intimate setting of Pieter Toerien’s Theatre on the Bay in Camps Bays is the perfect backdrop for Jonathan’s versatile performance and Topsy Turvy runs until 30 June; or enjoy it at Montecasino Studio Theatre in Johannesburg from 04 July to 05 August.
