Agulhas National Park

Cape Agulhas, Cape Overberg

Cape Agulhas is known as the ‘Cape of Storms’ which wrecked many ships en route to the east. Ancient people also left their mark on the landscape reminding us of earlier cultures, for example, here the Khoi-Khoi people trapped fish using ingeniously constructed tidal traps.

Five things to seek at the Agulhas National Park:

  • The southernmost tip of the African continent – about a kilometre west from the Cape Agulhas Lighthouse
  • Southern Right Whale – between June and November
  • African Black Oystercatcher – listed as ‘Endangered’
  • Damara Tern – listed as ‘Near Threatened’
  • Saltpans
