Alexandra township is located in Johannesburg, Gauteng and is adjoined to the wealthy suburb of Sandton, and the commercial and industrial areas of Wynberg and Marlboro. Alex, as Alexandra is known, is abuzz with vivid social cultures and it could not be more different from its neighbour, Sandton.
Alexandra Township was founded in 1912 and is Johannesburg’s oldest township. Nelson Mandela’s first Joburg home is in Alex, as are several historic churches, theatres and other sites. Alex is also a great place to sample traditional South African food and to learn about township life and culture. Easily accessible from the Marlboro Gautrain station, Alex is best explored with an experienced guide.
