Iziko Bo-Kaap Museum

Cape Town, Western Cape

A 10-minute walk from the Company’s Garden is the Bo-Kaap. By 1934, approximately three-quarters of the residents of the area were Muslim, and today there are nine mosques in the Bo-Kaap. Cape Malay cuisine is very popular and can be sampled in the local restaurants. The oldest mosque in the country, the Auwal Mosque, is situated behind the Iziko Bo-Kaap Museum. Built in the 1760s, the Iziko Bo-Kaap Museum is the oldest house in the area still in its original form. Exhibitions and programmes focus on the history of Islam at the Cape, Islamic decorative art and the history of the Bo-Kaap area.
