Iziko South African National Gallery

Cape Town, Western Cape

Situated in the Company’s Garden is South Africa’s premier art museum. This exceptional collection of South African, African and Western European art grew from an initial bequest by Thomas Butterworth Bayley in 1871. The Iziko South African National Gallery represents works from a range of both established and upcoming South African artists, covering various forms of artistic expression and art periods.

Boasting over 10 000 works in its Permanent Collection, the Gallery is known for its curated exhibitions that draw on contemporary and historic paintings and sculpture, works on paper, photography and new media, as well as indigenous traditional art, beadwork, textiles and architecture.

Selections from the Permanent Collection change regularly to enable the museum to have a full programme of temporary exhibitions. The exhibitions provide insight into the extraordinary range of aesthetic production in this country, the African continent and further afield. An array of temporary visiting exhibitions complements this programme.

This is a must-see destination for all visitors to the Mother City interested in art and culture.
