Johannesburg City Parks & Zoo

Johannesburg, Gauteng
Nature

Breathtaking and exciting outdoor recreation in Joburg:

Johannesburg Zoo: The zoo is unique, being the only zoo in Africa to house animals from the Amazon; and one of two zoos in South Africa to house a gorilla. The zoo also houses the Big Five and other animals from around the world.

Kloofendal Nature Reserve: Covering 150ha, the facility is one of the first nature reserves in Joburg and offers urbanities a retreat from city life. It is a cultural heritage and ecotourism facility in the suburb of Roodepoort with walking trails of various distances.

Johannesburg Botanical Garden: Unlike conventional botanical gardens in South Africa, which only has indigenous trees and plants, the Johannesburg Botanical Garden specialises in representing the flora of Joburg. Approximately 75% of the plants are exotic, reflecting the diversity of plants and trees in private gardens and open spaces in the city.

Klipriversberg Nature Reserve: Situated in the south of Joburg, comprising 700ha of koppies and open veld, the reserve is home to several plants, birds and wildlife, and is a rich archaeological site. It boasts the highest concentration of identified Iron Age sites on the Witwatersrand. The remains of the Batswana village are found in the reserve.

Delta Park: One of Joburg’s biggest green lungs and an ambler’s paradise, the facility offers 104ha of grassland and woodland to explore.

James & Ethel Gray Park: Nestled in the affluent suburb of Birdhaven, just south of glamorous Melrose Arch, the park was originally a bird sanctuary and is still home to an assortment of feathered residents. The park offers the first ever installed Acrobranch in South Africa.
