Nature

Have a picnic, enjoy walking, jogging, the rich wildlife, indigenous flora and natural rivers and streams situated in Joburg:

Pioneer Park and the Musical Fountain: This is an inspiring space for leisure and fun-filled concerts. A series of pathways creates a scenic pedestrian link between the dam and Joburg city’s skyline as backdrop.

Johannesburg Botanical Gardens: Located at Emmarentia Dam, this lovely park is ideal for events of any size. There is also a wedding chapel for wedding groups and for photographs. More than 20 000 indigenous trees can be found in the park.

Kloofendal Nature Reserve: One of the first nature reserves in Joburg. There are remains of early gold-mining activities on the site, and the 1884 Confidence Gold Mine, now a national monument, can be viewed by appointment. There is a stone amphitheatre, walking trails, a dam and organised walks and talks.

Klipriviersberg: Mainly comprising open veld and koppies, the reserve is home to numerous birds, plants and wildlife; as well as being a rich archaeological site. It boasts the highest concentration of identified Iron Age sites on the Witwatersrand. The reserve is fenced, and has several nature trails and hikes.

Melville Koppies: One of the most beautiful natural settings in Johannesburg, Melville Koppies covers 150ha. It is also the site of an ancient Iron Age furnace, and hosts many schools on educational trips. With its delicate ecosystem of indigenous plants, the koppies are suitable for family outings.

Florida Lake: This wide expanse of lake in the western suburbs of Johannesburg is the ideal location for braais and get-togethers.

Zoo Lake: Zoo Lake is one of the city’s most popular outdoor spaces, hosting numerous events. Large-scale screens can be erected, and there is ample space for filming and exhibitions.
