Karoo Desert National Botanical Garden

Cape Winelands, Western Cape

The Karoo Desert National Botanical Garden is the only truly succulent botanical garden in the southern hemisphere and on the African continent. Against the backdrop of the spectacular 2000m mountain peaks, the garden display plants from the arid and semi-arid regions of southern Africa. Spring is the floral highlight, when thousands of annuals and brightly coloured vygies come into flower.

This colour spectacle lasts from mid-August to the end of September. Falling within the Succulent Karoo Biome, the Garden boasts some 400 naturally occurring species. It is also a haven for over 300 species of rare and endangered plants. Almost 70 bird species have been recorded, as well as many small mammals. There is a well-stocked nursery and the shop offers botanical books and curios. The Kokerboom Restaurant offers refreshments.
