Mamelodi Township

Johannesburg, Gauteng

Mamelodi, part of the City of Tshwane Metro Municipality, is a township northeast of Pretoria. It was founded when 16 houses were built on the farm Vlakfontein in June 1953. The name was later changed to Mamelodi. The Mamelodi Heritage Experience is an entrepreneurial initiative based in Mamelodi, Tshwane.

The project seeks to share with domestic and international travellers the rich history of one of Gauteng’s oldest townships in a way that is both green and fun: through guided bicycle tours of Mamelodi – during which visitors stop at local heritage sites and learn about the history and origin of the area. Tour groups are given the opportunity to sample the diverse culinary penchants of the people of Mamelodi, which will deepen their intimate experience of the community.
