Sharpeville is a township situated between the two large industrial cities of Vanderbijlpark and Vereeniging in southern Gauteng. Sharpeville is one of the oldest of six townships in the Vaal Triangle. Sharpeville Day has been commemorated since 21 March 1960, and since 1994 has been the official Human Rights Day public holiday.
