Soweto Theatre

Johannesburg, Gauteng
Entertainment

The eye-catching Soweto Theatre, afforded spectacular views in the heart of the emerging Jabulani commercial node, opened with a jam-packed programme on the weekend of Africa Day, on Friday, 25 May 2012. It was a culmination of both national and global best practices in theatre design, including top-notch acoustics and state-of-the-art lighting and sound facilities.

In designing this theatre, the clients wanted the community to feel connected to it, emphasising that it is essentially something built for them. The design expresses its three performance venues. From a distance the theatre resembles various brightly coloured, curved structures varying in size. On closer inspection, it is revealed that these structures are the three different performance venues.

The largest is the RED theatre, which is a 436-seat venue with a fixed stage and seating. It has a full orchestra pit and a bridge for fly tower and wings. The other two venues are a 120-seater, the BLUE box, and an 80-seater, the YELLOW box. The two latter venues have added flexibility, as they allow for flexible stage and seating arrangements.

Additional facilities include:

  • an indoor foyer circulating all three venues
  • multi-level change rooms
  • an art collection on the walls of the theatre, exhibitions and decorative art
  • a landscaped parklandsafe, secure and guarded parking
  • full bar and a coffee-and-tea station
  • opportunities to host meetings and special events

Outside of the theatre there is also a special public space or foyer that can be used as an additional performance area, a social gathering place during intermission or just as a pause area to absorb the breathtaking environment in which the theatre is situated.
