The Springbok Experience

Cape Town, Western Cape
Museums

The Springbok Experience is a compelling, interactive rugby museum telling South Africa’s story through the eyes of its most powerful sport. It combines iconic and historic rugby objects with dozens of interactive touch screens, rugby skills tests for children (as well as adults) and a flagship Springbok store.

The two storey building is perfectly located at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town in elegant Portswood House, overlooking the main shopping precinct. It even has its own set of rugby poles. Visitors enter through an atmospheric rugby tunnel to a central hub leading off which is the shop and kicking, passing, fitness and reaction tests in the Springbok Trials zone.

On the first floor, visitors will find a treasure trove of rare and unique rugby artefacts dating from the 1880s to the present day. Iconic trophies, such as the Currie Cup, the jerseys and blazers of famous players, historic documents and personal artefacts of players are on display.

The cases are interspersed with touch screens where visitors can delve into the game’s history through archive match footage and reports or through specially commissioned audio-visual interviews and animations charting the rise of rugby in South Africa in all communities. There is even a specially commissioned sculpture of Nelson Mandela and the moment that he created to help change South Africa.

The Springbok Experience is a museum – but much more than that.
